Do You Know Who I Think I Am? My Relations With White Men

E-mail Print PDF

alt You may find this hard to believe but I’m black. I’m really black. I’m so black when Barack Obama was elected into office, I cried like a little boy who got the black slapped off his face for playin’ with his momma’s lipstick. I mean, how many kids did you know growing up in middle school with the nickname Malcolm, as in X? I had the X hat and matching t-shirt, read his autobiography as a freshman in high school and love watching Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple—I still recite her lines from the movie. I wanted to name my first son Malcolm Xavier and even in college I pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., a 99 year old organization founded by 12 prestigious black men.

Who Is the Next Harvey Milk?

E-mail Print PDF

With the recent weekend of San Francisco’s 2010 Pride festival, I couldn’t help but think about Harvey Milk and all that he’s done for our community. Here is a man who recognized that inequality was ruining the lives for thousands of gays and lesbians around the country, particularly in his residence of the Castro District of San Francisco. He was a visionary. He was an advocate. But the most memorable trait Harvey Milk possessed was that he was a natural born leader; someone who took a grass roots approach to get citizens to listen to his message about hope. Attached to my thoughts of Harvey Milk, bouncing around in my head like a rubber ball, was a simple question that I really had no answer to:
altWho will be the next Harvey Milk? In all that he made happen in his lifetime, and I might add in the little time span he used to accomplish his mission of making a difference, I don’t know if I can point out one individual who puts a face to the modern day “Gay Activist.”

Downlow? Be Down. Be Out!

E-mail Print PDF

I recently watched a documentary on Logo called On the Downlow that got me thinking about coming out and the challenges we face for those who are out, regarding same-sex marriage. And I know that not only is this a hot button for some, but it feels like to me we are beating a dead horse in the matter. But the fact is that a small percentage of people really made a difference in the relatively recent outcome of the repeal of Prop 8. Sadly, after watching this documentary I realized that as an African American gay man, it’s my ethnic brothers and sisters who are holding us back. Sure we’ve focused on the Mormon group because they forked over the most money and they were the most visual of all opposition, but there’s also the dark horse of the race that pushed us back a couple of steps.

A Wrong Turn on Civil Rights: A Road to Homosexual Equality

E-mail Print PDF
from MarriageEquality.org
There is a mushroom cloud filled with misconceptions, bogus beliefs, and misguided lawmaking that is darkening our journey to a better America. Legalization of same-sex marriage is not just about allowing gays and lesbians to express their love for each other through the institution of marriage; rather it is a step towards a broader acceptance. Marriage is not at risk of change in principles or logistics, we are demanding inclusion. Our nation’s children are not in danger of being recruited into a homosexual society through schools. The nucleus of family will not be turned into some social experiment to see if we are worthy of upholding the values of family and relationships. This is not about religion or politics, both the biggest cop-out of them all, more than that it is about our lives.
